The simpicity of the treatment and extraordinary research and results will change the industry forever. Prior to Treatment – You must arrive for treatment with clean skin. Absolutely no lotions, creams, makeup, powders, deodorant, etc. can be on the skin as these may block the follicles. Lash Extension MythsFrom whether your natural lashes wi...
From whether your natural lashes will be damaged to lash extensions are one size fits all, we’re sharing the truth about the most common lash extension myths on our blog today!
MYTH 1: Having lash extensions applied could hurt or feel uncomfortable. TRUTH: The process of having lash extension applied does not hurt and should never cause discomfort if they are being applied by a trained lash stylist. Actually, the lash extension application process is a very relaxing experience and many clients enjoy a nap. So if you have ever heard that having lash extensions applied can hurt or be uncomfortable, this is not true. No pain should ever be involved during lash extension applications. What is involved is a luxury, spa like experience to make you relax! MYTH 2: Eyelash extensions could damage my natural lashes. TRUTH: When you combine premium products and trained lash stylists with proper application techniques, then your natural lashes should never be damaged. During the lash application process, it’s imperative to the health of your lashes to have each natural hair isolated when an extension is adhered to it and ensure proper separation so that the hairs can continue to grow and shed as they would naturally. The combination of our top quality adhesive plus the individual lash attachment will sustain the health and integrity of your natural lash hairs indefinitely. MYTH 3: My natural lashes will be shorter if/when I decide to have my extensions removed. TRUTH: When eyelash extensions are applied by a trained lash stylist, your natural lashes are allowed to grow as usual. Women without lash extensions usually apply and remove mascara every day. The application and slight pulling of lashes when applying mascara followed by the cleaning and rubbing of your eyes to remove the mascara can greatly damage your lashes. With a proper lash extension application, there will be no damage and your lashes should grow better than they would if you were applying, wearing and cleaning off mascara day to day. So the myth that your natural lashes could be shorter if you were to remove your extensions is not true. MYTH 4: Eyelash extensions are one size fits all and my lashes will look just like my friend’s lashes after she got her lash extensions. TRUTH: All of us have different eye shapes as well as a different number of natural lashes. What does this mean? It means that lash extensions can be (and should be) customized just for YOU. It also means that your lash extensions may not look just like your friend’s lash extensions since you both have different eye shapes and different amounts of natural lashes. Here at Segreto Salon and Day Spa, we specialize in safe and customized eyelash extensions. Using our custom-built mapping system, our stylists are trained to implement our exclusive techniques which tailors a perfect design for each individual’s unique eye shape, lifestyle and desired lash look. Ready to make an appointment and begin your path to enjoying effortless beauty with lash extensions? If you have any more questions about lash extensions, the process or aftercare – give us a call and we will happily assist you! |
How to Take Care of Lash ExtensionsWe can never stress enough the impo...
We can never stress enough the importance of taking care of your lash extensions. Our goal is to provide information on how to best care for them so that your lashes always look flawless and most all, that you are happy and love them. Today we are sharing five best practices on how to best care of your lash extensions
The first thing you need to do to take the best care of your lash extensions is: Keep Them Clean: The best way to keep your lash extensions clean is by using a lash extension safe cleanser. For cleaning your eye area to remove makeup and eyeshadow, we recommend applying cleanser to a cotton pad. Be sure to saturate the cotton pad because the dry cotton could catch onto your lashes. Very gently rub your eyelid and avoid rubbing your lashes. When you need to clean your lashes, use your lash wand and gently brush through your lashes. Forget Oil Based Products: Any skin care products, creams or cosmetics that are oil based are a ‘no-no’ when it comes to lash extensions. Be sure to select products that are labelled oil free to ensure the longevity of your lashes. And when in doubt – always read the label of ingredients to make sure what you are using is truly oil free. Wear No Mascara (or very little): The beauty of lash extensions is that you have lovely, long, full lashes without having to wear mascara. We know that some ladies may still want to wear mascara on occasion, and that’s okay as long as it’s a mascara made for lash extensions. However, wearing no mascara at all is better when it comes to extending the life of your lashes. If you simply must wear mascara, be sure to ONLY wear a water based mascara, which is not the same as a water – proof mascara. Lastly, when applying your lash extension safe mascara, only use one coat and only apply to the tips of your lashes. Avoid over exposure to moisture: too much moisture on a constant basis is not good for your lashes. But daily washing of the face and activities like swimming are lash extension safe. Maintain refills regularly: All of the tips we have mentioned are very important, but this one is probably the most important! Sticking with your refill appointments every 2 weeks will keep your lashes looking their absolute best. The longer you wait for a fill, the harder it is for your lash stylist to keep your lashes looking full and fabulous. If you go too long without getting a lash refill, a full new set may be required. The Effects of Smoking on Your SkinTobacco is harmful to our body and ...
Tobacco is harmful to our body and wellbeing, no matter how you look at it. It is very damaging to our internal organs, such as the lungs and the heart, it affects the proper functioning of the skeletal, digestive and respiratory systems, and it causes cancer, etc. You are undoubtedly familiar with all these adverse effects that both doctors and the media in their anti-tobacco campaigns have conveyed to us.
But, do you know how tobacco negatively affects your skin? On the one hand, when we smoke, we reduce the blood flow to the skin, causing it to oxygenate much less, which hinders its regeneration process and causes a greyish appearance and a lack of defined texture. This lack of oxygen in the skin also damages its ability to heal, making it a slower and more difficult process in smokers, especially women. On the other hand, when tobacco smoke comes into contact with the skin on our face and hands –and body skin in general–, it dries it, instantly unbalancing its hydration levels. Cracked skin, expression lines, less elasticity... and of course, pigmented skin. The harmful components of tobacco also reduce the production of collagen and elastin, and this, as we know, causes premature aging and, in the short term, a gaunt appearance when the supporting tissues of the dermis are affected. Wrinkles around the contours of the eyes and lips appear earlier in smokers due to the mechanical contraction of the muscles when smoking. In addition, nicotine and other poisonous ingredients in tobacco raise the levels of a hormone called vasopressin. This results in the greater contraction of muscle fibres, decreased levels of oestrogen and the possibility of hair growth in women. Last, but not least, smoking is one of the primary causes of skin cancer (and, obviously, other cancers). Don't you think it's time to stop drawing more than 3,800 harmful substances into your body every day? Say no to tobacco! Be sure to see the ladies at Segreto Salon & Day Spa for more skin treatment options. |

Some offer instant access, others longer-lasting results, but one of the most important benefits that a waxing method should give us is without a doubt skincare. From a dermatological point of view, in order for a waxing method to look after our skin, and therefore our health, it should consider the type and condition of the skin, the type of hair, the area to wax, the susceptibility to ingrown hairs, hygiene requirements, and the moisture levels and elasticity of our skin. Taking all these issues into account, what is the healthiest waxing method? There's no doubt about it, Depilève waxes are carefully designed to protect our health. They approach waxing from all possible angles of skincare: with pre-waxing products that condition the skin and prime it for the process; with the best waxes formulated for different types of skin and hair, for each of the areas to wax, with the latest technology to adhere to the hair and not the skin, and with different melting points to maintain blood flow. If you have tried other waxes or waxing methods but have yet to try Depilève waxes, go ahead and book an appointment at Segreto Salon & Day Spa. You'll be pleasantly surprised with the experience and results of our cosmetic waxing treatments: your skin will be softer and more nurtured than ever. Chemical Peels & What You Need To KnowWHY HAVE A CHEMICAL PEEL
Generally...
WHY HAVE A CHEMICAL PEEL
Generally, fair-skinned and light-haired patients are better candidates for chemical peels. If you have darker skin, you may also have good results, depending upon the type of problem being treated. Skin sags, bulges, and more severe wrinkles do not respond well to chemical peels. They may need other kinds of cosmetic surgical procedures, such as laser resurfacing, a brow lift, eyelid lift, or dermal fillers. A Physician can help determine the most appropriate type of treatment for you. CHEMICAL PEELS CAN TREAT THE FOLLOWING
BEFORE YOU GET A CHEMICAL PEEL Tell your therapist if you have any history of scarring, cold sores that keep coming back, or facial X-rays. Your doctor may ask you to stop taking certain medication and prepare your skin by using other medications. Work with your therapist to determine the depth of your peel. This decision depends upon the condition of your skin and your goals for treatment. Your spa therapist can help you decide what depth of peel and what type of chemical solution is most appropriate, based on your skin type, which areas you want peeled, what kind of results you want, how much risk you are willing to take, and other issues. A small “test spot” may be peeled to get a better idea of the results, especially for people who have darker skin. Two to three weeks before the peel, you will need to begin preparing your skin by cleansing it twice a day, applying a special moisturizer twice a day, and using sunscreen every day. This skin care regimen will help the skin peel more evenly, speed healing after the peel, and may reduce the chance of infection and other complications, especially uneven colour changes in the skin. WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER A CHEMICAL PEEL Recovery time after a chemical peel depends on what kind of peel was done and how deep it was. With all types of peels, proper care of the skin after the peel is very important to speed healing, help results last longer, prevent infection, and avoid colour changes in the treated area caused by sun exposure. Proper skin care after a peel is very similar to the care used to prepare for a peel and typically involves: Cleansing your skin frequently and moisturize your skin daily. Avoiding any sun exposure until peeling has stopped and sunscreen can be used. After peeling has stopped, sunscreen should be used every day. New skin is more susceptible to sun damage. Chemical peels are designed to wound and remove the upper layers of the skin. You need to prepare yourself for how your skin will look immediately after the peel and throughout the healing process. Even with realistic expectations, you may not see results for several weeks or months after a chemical peel. To make a booking or for more information contact us at Segreto Salon & Day Spa |
Rejuvenate Your Face with a Chocolate FacialAs Valentine’s Day approaches...
As Valentine’s Day approaches, you may be turning to chocolate as a sweet treat for your sweetheart – but did you know it could be a sweet treat for your face, as well? Over the past few years, scientific research has shown that eating dark chocolate can benefit your heart, blood pressure, and mood, and now it should be no surprise to learn that dark chocolate can positively affect your skin too. Chocolate facials are the new trend taking the health and beauty world by force, because cocoa is chock-full of minerals and nutrients that help hydrate, tone, and nourish your skin.
Here are the top benefits a chocolate facial provides for your skin: Anti oxidative power: Blueberries, nuts, and teas have often been upheld as anti oxidative superfoods, but cocoa and dark chocolate are brimming with free radical fighting antioxidants. When free radicals accumulate in the body, oxidation can result in cell damage, tissue breakdown, and accelerated aging that can manifest itself in the skin on your face. A high antioxidant chocolate facial can repair skin cell damage and prevent future damage, which keeps your face looking younger and fresher. Rejuvenating power: Dark chocolate contains a multitude of vitamins and minerals that help rejuvenate and refresh your face. Vitamins A, B1, C, D, and E, along with iron and calcium, hydrate and moisturize your skin. These nutrients slough away dead skin cells and leave you with a healthy glow. Copper, zinc, and iron increase oxygen and blood flow to your face, which protects your skin from tissue damage. Nutrient-rich cocoa soothes dry, rough, and blemished skin, causing your face to looker fresher and healthier. Anti-aging power: A piece of dark chocolate can help reduce feelings of stress, and a facial application of dark chocolate can help reduce physical signs of stress. That is because cocoa can decrease the production of stress hormones, which leads to less collagen breakdown in the skin. As a result, your face will display fewer wrinkles and fine lines, as well as less acne. The skin will look tighter and more toned after being treated with a chocolate facial. Protective power: Cocoa is full of flavanols, which work to protect your skin from sun damage and the impact of harmful UV rays. Not only will applying dark chocolate directly to your skin help protect your face from sunburn and redness, but the flavanols in cocoa will also help repair existing sun damage and keep your face looking and feeling more hydrated under the sun’s harsh light. If the benefits listed above haven’t convinced you to try a chocolate facial treatment today, then how about the simple fact that you can bask for an hour in the warm, rich aroma of chocolate? What can Lash & Brow tints do for you?Eyebrow tinting is a quick treatmen...
Eyebrow tinting is a quick treatment with amazing results, with the ability to make eyebrows appear fuller and darker in the blink of an eye. When combined with an eyebrow shape be it threading or waxing a defined beautiful pair of brows can be achieved in minutes.
The lashes appear clearly longer and more voluminous, as the tinting accentuates the full length of the lashes faded by sun and water. With tinted eyelashes the eyes look more vivid, even in the morning when waking up they already look expressive and attractive for weeks – even without mascara. How does it work? The process involves a quick and non-surgical procedure using vegetable dye as tint. Compared to putting on mascara or colouring in your eyebrows, the effects of eyelash and eyebrow tinting are very natural. Brows & Lashes are dyed to match hair colour or to accentuate facial features. The broad colour spectrum permits a selection of 9 different colours and will fulfil even the most extravagant desire. Choose between black, graphite, blue-black, deep blue, natural brown, light brown, chestnut, red or blond. The best result is achieved when applying the tint regularly because with each tinting the colour will penetrate deeply into the eyelashes leaving them more intensely and durably coloured. Frequently asked questions. Who is it for? Eyelash tinting will benefit people that are sensitive to make-up, people who are active in sports (especially swimming) and people who have no time to apply make-up daily. This process is also ideal for people who wear contact lenses because they don’t have to suffer putting on mascara any longer. Is Eyelash Tinting Dangerous? This is the most common question among clients interested in tinting their eyelashes. Since eyelashes are close to the eyes, it is important to ensure that every procedure done around the eyes are safe. What Happens During the Treatment? A typical eyelash tinting takes around fifteen minutes. Because of this, tinting your eyelash can fit into the busiest of schedules. Once you arrive at the salon, the therapist will place cotton under your closed eyes and then apply a small amount of vegetable dye onto your eyelashes. After ten minutes, the dye is removed with water. The results could last around four to six weeks. |
Pros & Cons of fat freezingWhat are the rare long-term effects...
What are the rare long-term effects?
In some very rare cases, fat cells respond by enlarging rather than dying. This condition is called paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH). Researchers are not sure why PAH occurs, but most people who develop the condition are men. While PAH does not cause any symptoms aside from changing physical appearance, only surgery can reverse it. Additional rare complications that may occur after treatment include: Abrupt and undesirable changes in fat layering Dizziness, light-headedness, sweating, painting, nausea, and flushing Frostbite, or first- and second-degree freeze burns Hyperpigmentation, or dark skin coloration that often resolves on its own Lower lip muscle weakness following procedures involving the neck or chin Pain that starts several days after the treatment and usually resolves when numbness goes away, or after about a month Reduced movement or response of the tongue following procedures involving the neck or chin Reduced saliva production and dry mouth following procedures involving the chin or neck Scarring or changes to skin colour Subcutaneous induration, a generalized hardness or specific hard nodules that develop in the treated area and can be painful What are the positive results? One benefit is that, unlike with diet and exercise, fat cells are actually destroyed and removed from the body. This means the same fat cells cannot return or enlarge with weight gain. There are several other benefits: It can help people who have lost weight or at a healthy weight but still have excess fat in particular areas. It is a low-risk procedure for most people. The results look natural, as they develop gradually in the weeks following the surgery. The risk of skin dimpling or bumps is low because fat cells are destroyed evenly across a patch of skin. The skin barrier is not broken or compromised, removing most of the risk of complications, such as infection and scarring. There are few reported adverse reactions or outcomes. There is less risk of regaining weight and results are long-lasting because fat cells are actually destroyed and removed from the body. There is no need to take time off from work or everyday activities afterward. Overall, the procedure can help boost self-confidence, especially when combined with weight loss achieved through a healthful diet and exercise. |

What are the risks?
Although research is still limited, but is generally viewed as a safer, non-invasive type of fat reduction surgery than traditional procedures, such as liposuction. Most people do not feel anything during the procedure, aside from a tugging sensation where the skin is between the device's two cooling panels. As the procedure does not involve any cutting, tissue manipulation, or anaesthesia, most people do not need any recovery time and can immediately resume normal activities. The only noticeable side effects of the procedure tend to be minor and occur only around the area of treatment. Most minor side effects reduce or go away within a few days to weeks after the procedure. It is normal, however, to experience numbness or loss of sensation in the treatment area for around a month. Common immediate side effects include: Bruising Firmness Mild to moderate pain Minor swelling Muscle cramping Numbness Pinching sensation Redness Skin sensitivity Stinging Tenderness Tingling A person may continue to experience these side effects for a few weeks after the procedure. Other common side effects that a person may experience in the first few weeks after the treatment include: A feeling of fullness in the throat after treatments involving the neck or chin region Diarrhoea, as dead fat cells are removed from the body Itchiness, especially a few days after the procedure Body regions where fat freezing is considered safe and effective for removing minor fat deposits include: Abdomen Back Buttocks and under the buttocks Flanks Thighs Under the armpit Under the chin or upper neck If you are unsure or need more advise feel free to contact us at Segreto Salon and Day Spa for more information. Cryolipolysis Fat Freeze TreatmentThe goal of Cryolipo is to remodel ...
The goal of Cryolipo is to remodel the shape of the body and improve bulges of resistant fat. The concept of this procedure is to freeze fat cells into crystals which cause a large percentage of the fat cells to be destroyed. These destroyed fat cells are then slowly metabolized by natural pathways in the body over a period of 6 to 12 weeks. Cryolipolysis, commonly known as ‘fat freezing’, is a non-surgical alternative used to reduce specific areas of fat.
Up until this point, these treatments have always been performed at temperatures between 3 and - 5 degrees Celsius, but the latest research has shown increased results by simply dropping the temperature by 2 – 3 degrees. We are now able to treat these stubborn fatty pockets at temperatures of -7 and -8 degrees Celsius, not increasing the risk to the patient in any way. So we are able to ensure a greater percentage of fat cells being targeted in a treatment. Not only have we managed to decrease the treatment temperatures, but we can further enhance the treatment result by inserting PDO threads into the treated area, stimulating an even greater result. This is how we’ve managed to improve the treatment outcome from a 20% reduction in the measurement of the treated pocket, by up to a 40% reduction. What an incredible break through! The procedure lasts for an hour and is most often used for permanent reduction of stubborn fat pockets and for general body sculpting. Unlike laser liposuction which has little to no effect on destroying fat cells, or surgical liposuction which is an extreme treatment and an inherently invasive procedure with surgical risk, potential for adhesions, prolonged down time, possible scarring and post procedure pain, cryolipolyisis has little to no downtime and is an ideal walk in walk out treatment. Waxing FAQ'sHOW SOON CAN I EXERCISE AFTER I'...
HOW SOON CAN I EXERCISE AFTER I'VE WAXED?
It's likely your skin may be sensitive post-wax, so it's best to avoid tight-fitting clothing—especially gym clothing. We recommend waiting for at least 24-hours before you work out as friction and trapped sweat may serve to irritate the skin causing redness. Also, avoid deodorant if you've had an underarm wax. WHAT SHALL I WEAR FOR MY SESSION? Avoid any tight fitting or awkward clothing which will cling to your skin. Loose soft clothing will help the skin breathe while pores remain open. A lot of people feel daunted by the prospect of baring all for a bikini wax, but our practitioners are professional, and we provide disposable underwear if requested, to help you feel at ease. HOW MANY DAYS BEFORE I GO ON HOLIDAY SHOULD I BOOK MY WAX? To avoid any redness or swollen legs when you pop on your bikini for the first time of the year, it's a good idea to plan a wax for two or three days before you jet off on your holidays. If you're going somewhere hot, allowing the skin to calm down again will prevent it from becoming super inflamed, just make sure you wear a suitable SPF. CAN I GO IN THE SWIMMING POOL AFTER I’VE WAXED? You can certainly take your smooth legs into the pool once you've waxed, but we would recommend waiting for at least 24-hours. This is to prevent any chlorine or other substances from entering your newly opened pores, which may lead to irritation, infection or just general redness. WILL WAXING REMOVE MY TAN? Waxing can indeed lighten the skin, because you are effectively removing a layer of dead skin cells, revealing a fresh layer of skin underneath. At the same time, because you’re removing any fine, dark hairs when you wax, your skin will automatically look lighter. If you're waxing before your holiday, this shouldn't be a problem as you'll have plenty of opportunities to get a fresh tan, don't forget the SPF! HOW CAN I OPTIMISE THE RESULTS OF MY WAX? Once your hairs start to grow back, the best way to prolong the smooth post-wax feeling is to exfoliate and moisturise regularly. By moisturising your skin it helps sooth, hydrate and heal which in the long run can help reduce hair growth and combat ingrown hairs. If you are unsure about waxing feel free to speak to our spa therapists at Segreto Salon & Day Spa for more information that will put your mind at ease. |
Your Expert Guide To Waxing This SummerWith the summer months comes sunshi...
With the summer months comes sunshine, long days at the beach, and, for many of us, the urgent rush to remove any unwanted hair that’s accumulated over the colder months, before donning our swimsuits.
And while some of us are happy to use a razor and deal with the upkeep that comes with shaving, many women prefer the smoother result they get with waxing (plus love the fact that they’re hairless for a lot longer!) If you’re a waxing beginner but have considered giving it a try, here is a list of waxing FAQs to help put your mind at ease so that you can be hair-free all summer long. WILL WAXING MAKE MY HAIR GROW BACK THICKER AND DARKER? There is an over-shared myth that hair removal, including waxing, causes hair to grow back dark and dense, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. Hair removal rarely affects the pigment and thickness of the hair when it grows back, as these factors are usually genetic and hormonal—therefore unique to each person. While shaving can make hair appear thicker because of the angle the hair is sliced, waxing removes the hair from the root, therefore avoiding this problem. Another bonus of waxing is that hairs will grow back slower meaning less upkeep and smoother legs for longer! DOES WAXING HURT? Everyone’s pain tolerance is different, but most people experience a little discomfort during a waxing session. To minimise any pain and help reduce sensitivity, skip tea and coffee five hours before getting waxed; caffeine restricts the blood vessels and stops the skin from getting the blood flow it needs, increasing sensitivity. HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR A WAX? Firstly, make sure your hair is of a good length to be waxed. Ideally, this is about 3mm long. The wax needs this much hair to grip onto, so it can remove it directly from the root. Also, be sure to exfoliate your skin one-two days before your appointment to remove any dead skin cells and make sure your skin is well hydrated. When skin is dry, hair is likely to break off when waxed. Just before your appointment, don't apply any of your products to the skin as it should be completely natural as not to interfere with the wax. CAN I SHAVE BETWEEN WAXING SESSIONS? It’s best to avoid shaving altogether when you’re waxing regularly (a regular wax should occur every four-six weeks). As mentioned above, when you wax you slow down and reduce hair growth and the hair that does grow back is easier to remove. You also need hair to be at a certain length to see the benefits of your wax, so shaving them before a wax is counterproductive. If you shave in between waxing sessions, you also run the risk of irritating your hair follicles which can lead to painful and unpleasant ingrown hairs. |

Summer is in full swing, but before you slip your feet into your favourite pair of sandals, be sure to get your feet as summer-ready as the rest of you (because nobody wants to see yellow nails, blisters, and dry, crusty heels!).
Tanned feet on the beach with sun cream on From going barefoot on the beach, to wearing the skimpiest of footwear out on the town, your feet are always on display when the sun makes an appearance. That’s why we’ve rounded up some of the most common feet faux pas, and the best remedies to banish them. DRY, CRACKED HEELS As cute as summer sandals and flip-flops may be, they don’t offer a whole lot, if anything, when it comes to cushioning and support. The result of this is hardened, dry heels, made up of layer after layer of dead skin The solution? Invest in a heavy-duty, nourishing moisturiser that will penetrate the skin's barrier and moisturise on a deep level. Apply nightly throughout the summer to keep your heels looking and feeling soft and beautiful! BLISTERED, SUNBURNT TOES When it comes to sun cream application, many of us forget to include the tops of our feet and then end up with unsightly sunburn blisters, which are sure to sting when dipping in the sea. To avoid this, be sure your sun cream is at least SPF30 and remember to apply it regularly throughout the day from head to toe. TOUGH, PAINFUL CALLUSES Callouses are those unsightly raised bumps that form to protect your feet when your shoes rub up against your skin, and can usually be found on the big toe, the back of the heel, and along the bottoms and sides of your feet To get rid, use a foot file and gently smooth the callous, preferably when you're in the shower, so it has a chance to soften a little. And to prevent callouses from forming in the first place, be sure to invest in shoes that fit well, and wear socks when possible to reduce friction. BRITTLE, YELLOW NAILS While there are several reasons for yellowing nails, one of the leading causes is overusing nail varnish. But that doesn't mean you should do without your bright summer toes this summer, instead, treat yourself to a non-chip pedicure which lasts a lot longer. That way you spend more time sipping on a cosmopolitan than reapplying your latest smudged or chipped nail. You’ll also be less worried about wearing your new open-toe sandals to a summer event. SWEATING, SWOLLEN FEET When it gets hot out, the result is sometimes swollen feet, otherwise known as oedema. Swollen feet and ankles occur when excess body heat makes the blood vessels expand, which allows fluids to flow into the surrounding tissues. To prevent this from happening, you should increase your circulation and loosen up tightened muscles. This is easily achieved with full body massages which focus on relaxing you from head to toe, ensuring your feet feel supple and smooth as ever. FOUL, FOOT ODOURS With the summer sun comes sweat, and with sweat comes stinky feet, but luckily this affliction is an easy one to fix! Feet get smelly when housed in shoes and socks that aren't breathable. Bacteria break down the sweat, which in turn leads to a smell that is less than desirable. To prevent foot odour, be sure to keep your feet dry and try not to wear the same pair of shoes two days in a row (to give your shoes a chance to dry out as well). Wash your feet every day, making sure you dry thoroughly afterwards. By keeping your feet in tip-top shape during the summer, not only will you look the part as you saunter along beaches, but you can also rest assured that your feet are in good health and you're minimising the risk of developing any infections. To get your feet ready for the summer in the most relaxing way possible, treat yourself and a friend to a pampering pedicure from Segreto Salon & Day Spa. |

Why You Deserve a Manicure & A PedicureA manicure/pedicure is not as ...
A manicure/pedicure is not as expensive as you might believe, and you should take the time to get one professionally done, because you deserve it. Here’s why.
You Deserve to be Healthy A proper nail salon or spa, like May Blossom, will always use disinfected tools to ensure there’s no risk of harm to the client. On top of that a skilled manicurist will ensure that no clip ever gets too close, cuts skin, or otherwise causes you pain. A professional pedicure, in turn, will be one where your toenails are trimmed in a way that will ensure no ingrown toenails form. You Deserve to be Beautiful Bright, gorgeous nails are an important sign of attractiveness. They’re a signpost that says that you are willing to put in the effort to take care of yourself. Why leave that in amateur hands, when you can have a proficient specialist maximize the aesthetic appeal of your nails. You Deserve to be Happy There’s just something about clean and crisp nails done just the way you like. It makes you feel good just glancing down and seeing them shining there in the light. Getting a manicure and pedicure is more than just getting your nails done right – it’s also a way to turn a boring chore into a moment to be pampered. The happiness you’ll get from the luxury of being attended to might be worth it all by itself. Another important benefit that one can derive from a manicure is exfoliation. Dead skin cells and calluses growing in your nails and hands are removed in the manicure process. As such, it allows new skin cells to grow and regenerate which actually results to exfoliation. Moreover, getting a manicure also removes fungal growth that accumulates at the side of your nails. While most people are unaware of the unhealthy effects of fungal growth, a manicure takes care of these effects even before they proliferate. Finally, getting a manicure is very stress relieving. Basically the hands are the most hardworking part of the body and they actually need a break after a long day’s work. Besides, getting a manicure is one way to pamper and treat yourself. It can be very relaxing to see beautifully done nails at the end of the day. There are a lot of wonderful nail polish shades that you can choose for your nails for everyday wear or for special occasions. |
Maintaining Healthy NailsMaintaining healthy nails is essent...
Maintaining healthy nails is essential not only for beauty but they also provide a true portrait into your personal health. Considering this, it is important to devote some time to take care of the nails of your hands and feet. So how do you keep your nails healthy and beautiful? Follow an all-around healthy lifestyle plus apply the following tips as a DIYer or find a competent nail technician to ensure
Sanitized Nail Equipment Ensure that your tools are properly sanitized with a disinfectant to avert contamination before each use. Keep your tools in a sealed bag only after they have been sanitized to avoid the production of bacteria. File in one direction Your nails rip and become furry with time when you file in opposite direction – the same as what happens to the strings on a violin. The back and forth action produce small splits and rifts on your nail, and eventually uncontrollable cracks and rips. Have patience in filing your nails in one direction. The process may be a bit slower but it produces a more superior and smoother end result. Never Cut your Cuticles Cutting your cuticles create tiny open wounds that become health risks to your fingers. The purpose of cuticles is to protect your nails from infections. Pushing them back once per week using cuticle oil with cuticle pusher does the trick because it creates a soft barrier. With the absence of a cuticle oil, use olive oil; it is all a good substitute for cuticle oil and most people have some in the kitchen. Cuticles are part of our being. Therefore, protect and keep them. Apply a Base Coat Using a base coat prolongs your manicure. Nails have natural oils that stop nail polish from sticking well, and they require a seal, which is the base coat before using your favourite colour. The base coat also prevents staining of the nails from prolonged use of dark colour polishes. Do not use a top coat as a substitute; a topcoat is heavier, takes more time to dry and dries harder. Apply Nail Polish at Moderate Temperatures High and humid temperatures prevent drying. Applying polish in fresh and dry weather is preferable. Give yourself time to dry your nails naturally or use a fan set on cool for a beautiful, long-lasting varnish. Apply Polish Thinly Blemishes and smudges are a result of over-applying nail polish on your handiwork as it dries slower and forms lumps as well. Additionally, shaking your bottle creates air that becomes trapped and create bubbles. Rolling the bottle between your palms a few times is enough. Dipping the brush in and out of the bottle too many times produces bubbles – restrain from doing this. Two light coating of colour on a light coating of base coat ending with the top coat is sufficient for a perfect finish as it dries faster and keeps you away from any mishaps. Cleaning up a Nail Smudge You do not want to smudge your pedicure/manicure using Q-tips because the cotton fibres will get stuck on your polish. Use a polish remover pen or if it’s not available, use a lint fee nail wipe, dipping it in nail polish remover and carefully wipe out the smudge on the skin before the polish dries. Filbert-head brushes available in art stores are also great. Protect your Nail Polish Use tepid water when showering or washing your hair within the first eight hours of doing your manicure or pedicure if you want a lasting manicure as a general rule. Hot water, rough work and nail polish do not mix. Wear protective gloves when doing substantial and long-lasting hand activities. Go Natural Artificial nails are a short term beauty fix and should be used as such; people often discover damage and thinning of their nails when they are removed after long-term use. Going natural is always an option. Nail extensions and gels require maintenance every 2 or 3 weeks and even then can lead to damage of the natural nails. Your nail beds and the surrounding cuticle area all need to be cared for on a weekly basis. After your shower gently push back the cuticles, massage in some cuticle oil and you’re good to go until your next full treatment. |
Microblading Touch UpMicroblading is a process some peop...
Microblading is a process some people use to improve the appearance of their sparse eyebrows. While the procedure may seem similar to getting a tattoo, the results are only semi-permanent and will fade within one to three years. The microblading artist uses a series of fine blades to insert a colour pigment into the skin in order to fill in areas of the eyebrow. A type of dye is used matches the natural brow colour as much as possible and will seem darker at first. This is expected since the colour will fade out within the following weeks.
Since the final effect is not known right after the procedure has been done, you will have a return appointment to for a follow up touch up within a few 4-6 weeks. This is always necessary and it is something to discuss with your microblading artist. You should expect your brows to fade by the time you come back for your follow up appointment. People with oily skin often notice their microblading procedure to not be as dark as they expected. The “hairs” may appear fuzzier than on skin that is normal, but the effect can still be attractive. A touch up may be needed after a few weeks to improve the overall effect. Most of the time someone who has had the microblading procedure done will notice an uneven appearance after a few weeks. Microblading aftercare is essential in order to ensure the best results of the procedure. Clients should avoid washing the area for a week or more so excess moisture is kept away from the brow area. Strenuous activity that could cause profuse sweating is also not recommended during this time. If any itching or redness occurs, an aftercare ointment or Vaseline can help relieve the discomfort. Most of the time clients are scheduled for a return visit to the microblading technician to check whether a touch up is needed. If the pigment has faded unevenly, the technician can fill in the areas that have faded too much. This procedure is very much like the original process with the technician drawing the pattern than will be filled in. Once the client and technician have agreed upon the needed touch up area, a numbing solution is applied so the client will not feel any unnecessary pain. It will take about 20 minutes for the numbing agent to take full effect. The microblading touch up process is simply a repeat of the original procedure, but is restricted to the areas that need to be filled in. Since the treatment is intended to produce the look of individual eyebrow hairs, the technician will use the required size of blades in order to create the look. Microblading touch up procedures require the same aftercare as the original procedure, but the healing process does not take as long. If a follow-up visit is not scheduled within four to six weeks after the procedure, the client may request a touch-up. They may not be satisfied with the final appearance of their brows after the expected fading has taken place. Just remember that microblading is not like beautiful pedicures, it is more permanent so the touch-up is vital for the overall look of your brows. |
6 Benefits of Swedish MassageSwedish massage therapy is the most...
Swedish massage therapy is the most well-known and widely practiced type of therapeutic massage—and for good reason. This type of massage focuses on muscle relaxation, targeting superficial muscles (rather than the connective tissues targeted in deep-tissue massage) and increasing blood circulation.
Wondering if you should make a booking for a Swedish massage? Check out some of the benefits below to learn why a Swedish massage might be a great choice for you. Pain management. If you have a condition like sciatica or osteoarthritis and are suffering from chronic pain as a result, Swedish massage can be an effective method for managing that pain in a natural way. Notify your massage therapist about your pain points, he or she can target those areas and use a stroking motion to improve local circulation and reduce muscle tension. Increased blood flow. Your Swedish Massage Therapist should use effleurage – a long, stroking motion in the direction of blood flow towards the heart – in order to open up your blood vessels and increase your blood flow. Increased blood flow means that your muscles are getting more nutrients and oxygen and that your body is removing toxins more efficiently. Rehabilitation for muscle injuries. Your Therapist should also rely on kneading and friction to address any existing injuries, such as adhesions (which occur when muscle tissues fuse together). Many people say that this technique, which relaxes layers of muscle, makes it feel as if the Massage Therapist is “working out the kinks.” Increased flexibility. When your muscles are more relaxed, you’re able to experience a wider range of motion. A combination of Swedish massage and regular stretching is a great way for anyone to stave off workout-related injuries and get the most out of their periods of exercise. Reduced stress. Swedish massages are meant to maximize relaxation—you’ll be on a massage table, in a peaceful environment, with a professional spending an extended time (between 60 – 120 minutes) giving you a massage. The combination of the hands-on attention and the environment should relax you, lowering the level of the stress hormone cortisol in your body. Lowering your stress level offers a surprising number of additional benefits, including reducing or eliminating tension headaches, giving you more energy, and allowing you to get a better night’s sleep. Improved immune system. One other great benefit of reducing your stress with a Swedish massage is that the lower cortisol levels allow your immune system to grow stronger, meaning that you’re less likely to get sick and can spend more time doing the things you enjoy. Swedish massage is a great way to treat yourself—but it’s also a lot more than that. The physical and mental health benefits of a Swedish massage make it a great option for those new to massage or someone looking to a complete massage experience. |
The History of Swedish MassageThe Swedish massage is one of the m...
The Swedish massage is one of the most popular massage techniques in the entire world.
Swedish massage is a series of touches and movements of tissue and joints that causes relaxation, improved circulation, reduced muscle and emotional tension, improved flexibility, and easing of pain. While there is some controversy surrounding its origins, it is generally thought that Dr. Peter Henrik Ling (1776-1839) created a program of touch and movements that we refer to today as “Swedish Massage.” Dr. Ling was a lifelong scholar, whose extensive travels ultimately contributed to his poor health. Ling suffered from a variety of ailments, including rheumatism, lung disease, and gout. It was because of his health that Ling pursued fencing in an effort to improve his conditions and ease his chronic pain. He soon realized, however, that fencing alone was not enough to relieve him of his pain, and he began developing a program which he referred to as “medical gymnastics.” Very early on, Ling realized the value of touch, and the study of what he called “the body and psychological condition of man” led him to found The Royal Central Gymnastic Institute in 1813. Ling spent the rest of his life devoted to these studies, which came to be known in Europe as “Swedish Movements” and in the United States as the “Swedish Movement Cure.” There is some controversy surrounding his designation as the “Father of Massage,” and many people assert that the techniques Ling used were borrowed from Chinese, Egyptian, Greek, and Roman practitioners of “medical touch” and massage. What is not controversial, though, are the benefits to be gained from this type of massage therapy. Swedish massage typically consists of five basic movements performed on muscles and joints. The first movement, “effleurage,” is a series of long, gliding strokes going in the direction of blood flow to the heart. Usually, the massage therapist will start with the leg or the back; however, there are no hard and fast rules on which part of the body to start the massage. Pétrissage involves rolling, kneading or squeezing of soft tissue. Typically, this movement follows effleurage; but, again, the order in which these touches occur are not set in stone and many therapists choose the order of touch in response to the subtle signals they receive from the body during treatment. Tapotement, friction and vibration are movements used to help loosen, relax and energize the muscles. They can be done with a cupped hand, the fingers, or the edges of the hands and they are also helpful in reducing scar tissue and increasing blood flow. As we already mentioned, Swedish massage is the most frequently performed technique; however, it is not recommended for everyone especially for some elderly and frail clients, those who have recently undergone surgery, clients with excessively high blood pressure, or pregnant women who would find it too uncomfortable to lie on their bellies. As with any therapy, the most important part of the treatment is to discuss your medical history with your therapist. |
